excellent rebuttal. his research, article, and report appear to have frightening gaps in data and to be overloaded with subjective value judgements masquerading as facts. it's disturbing that his piece was published in the New York Times.

"Mixed-race kids do have one advantage over white and black kids: the mixed-race kids are much more attractive on average"

Well damn here I am thinking I am a handsome black devil, just to find out Im an ugly black bastard, who knew?
  • Alicia "aka" Fashiona · 1 year ago
Cinmike, you might be a very good looking black man. If Lil Wayne aka the Gremlin can produce decent looking kids, I am sure you will be ok.

    Good Article, Twanna

I happen to agree that they're prettier. I've conducted my own experiment and was quite happy with the outcome. Whether they'll achieve as much, or more, than I have remains to be seen I sure hope so!

Yum @ coco babies! I want one but can't see how it's possible since I'm white and so is my b/f ;o)

Great stuff, you took down a pretty big name, catching him in some very lazy research. Onward and upward. Well done.

    who knew.....

lamesabassman......... gee... I turned out okay.... so ... what's the rumpus....

Nicely done. I read "Freakonomics", and I was not impressed. I know this guy is thought of as being some brilliant thinker nowadays, but reading his book I just kept thinking how arrogant he was. He says that he does not have any preconceived notions when he asks questions, and all he does is crunch numbers and let the correct conclusions just drop out of his empirical analysis. I may not be the sharpest beak in the flock, but I do know that you can prove just about anything if you use statistics cleverly enough, and in his book it was clear to me that he was crunching *just the right numbers* to back up his personal theories. His "attractiveness conclusion" bears this out, when he was obviously using nothing but the personal biases of the interviewers to "prove" his marquee point.

Being the mixed person I am ( 1/2 polish 1/2 african american) I consider myself attractive, and like to think others do too. I will also admit that growing up there are certain identity issues that arise and the aproach to dealing with them varies from person to person. You never realize how traumatic it is, to a child in the 70's, to pick a race on a standardized form when there are only 5 options

    1. white
    2. black
    3. asian
    4. hispanic
    5 pacific islander

suddenly you find yourself on the outside of society.

I was lucky enough to grow up in a town that was culturally diverse where I didn't feel totally alienated or ostracized. Turns out my town had the highest per capita number of mixed relationships in the country.....go figure.

But growing up mixed has its pitfalls. It took me forever to figure out that Dominicans know how to cut my hair. Going through your formative years with a jacked up haircut is kinda demoralizing. People constantly trying to tell me I was spanish....which I wasn't. Although I magically became egyptian after 9/11.

The thing that people associate with attractiveness that gets highlighted being mixed ( light brown skin, green eyes, wavy hair) fools alot of people into thinking they're attractive.......lets just say there are some lightskinned, green eyed trolls out there with frizzy hair.

This seems to be the rallying cry for today's modern black women who strictly dates out.

"Mixed babies look better" Really? I'm sorry I'm not a sycophant, but that's just dumb.

Not wonder their is a legion of black women buying weaves every single day. Oh, they would love to tell you its because black men love that type of hair. But we all know that Bull.

People have got to get their mind straight.

The Freaknomics guy is a jerk, but that was known from before. He definitely uses the "lying with stats" technique. He hates miscegenation, so he will use any stats possible to prove his screwed-up point.

But to counter that with an even stupider point is just as ridiculous.

gee..... just what would it take for us to realize that we are all from Mother Earth..
and if we were under attack from the Great Beyond... would we stand as one ....
or cop to the fact that .... " I'm from out of town and this does'nt include me....."
when you give credence to assholes.... you lower the bar extremely.
just let them know that you got their number and feed them to the hounds...
'cause we got bigger fish to fry..... like the ones who pull our strings on a daily
basis and then claim it's economy, stupid.... all the while blowing smoke and sending their funds off shore and " .... Beyond "

when 2% control the 98... guess who's gonna be left at the gate....

lamesabassman...." all 'n' all... we're just another brick in the Wall....."

Such arguments are not new however, it's time we start interrogating them in serious debate so that these idiots will either get edu-ma-cated or learn to keep their ignorant mouths shut! I applaud you, FBC!

@ Hippiechyck: Thanks for the compliment!

    @ Clnmike: You're funny!! :)

@ Alicia: There a A LOT of ugly folks with beautiful kids and beautiful celebrities with ugly kids. I'm not naming manes or anything. I'm just saying, um, you know ...

@ dunderklompje: Glad your experiment turned out okay. :)

    @ Bexxie: Adopt!! :)

@ Clnmike: Um, you can keep Angelina and her army of babies. I'll take Brad. Fuck, that man improved with age. Thelma & Louise? I was like, "Ewwww, who's the skinny ugly guy???" Fight Club? Ocean's 11? YUM!!!!

    @ don: THANKS!! :)

    @ lamesabassman: :)

@ Baba Doodlius: But quote ever from my stats class? "Stats don't lie, people do." You can typically use numbers to back up whatever arguement you want. So, it's about getting down to the nitty gritty of what they're counting.

@ dkzone: I didn't know you were mixed. Why were you hiding this info from us?!?! :) THANK you for your very rich comment, by the way.

@ JustIgnorant: Yeah, I think we're all on the same page with the “Mixed babies look better” stuff; it's silly.

@ lamesabassman: Yay for Chicago!!! :) I may be a Chicagoan, but my heart sprouts little green rows of corn for my beloved homestate.

@ Peggy b.: THANKS! I was really proud of that piece.

Hmmm I don't get it.. We all are mixed at some points. I do know
that not all MIXED children are prettier. I have a few cousins that are mixed and butt ugly. I love them anyway. In my life and time I seen more black children to be the most beautiful. I guess cause I love darkskin.

    "...more attractive..."

read- not as likely to be dark-complexioned, possessing more loosely-curled hair than most Black Americans, and combining the more culturally appealing features of both parents. In other words, in the eyes of Leavitt, exotic.
  • Twanna A Hines funkybrownchick · 1 year ago
Interesting comment about the "exotic" stuff.
