I do think we have types; I'm attracted to active, involved, and interesting people in terms of their personalities. In terms of a woman's look, it's the petite, dark haired brunettes with 'bright' eyes (eyes that shine when she smiles - I'm a complete sucker!). And if she's a surfer, that's just a bonus!
Now, admittedly, I am also a sucker for a red head with a cute smile, but since those are few and far between, I find myself gravitating towards the former.
I've met blondes (and variations of). I've met stunning tall beautiful women, but because they aren't petite (ie, shorter than me, athletic etc) it just doesn't seem to do anything for me...
Strange, isn't it?
Do we have types? Yes, but with conditions. Sometimes, our 'type' is what we crave, whereas what we need is something else entirely.
I'm with you on all these types except the blondies. That I'll substitute with a yummy coffee chip ice cream from Asia--Hot Indian Doctors. Dark haired, usually compact, dark-eyed, long black lashes, kinda bushy brows, good-sized, sharp noses...love them. My last real BF was not an Indian doctor yet, but he was getting there. And lord but he was cute. And talented. Ahem.
HIDs are highly underrated.
I think we certainly have types of people we are drawn to - sometimes because of the physical attributes, sometimes because of their personality and sometimes a combonation of both.
Is it possible that people's types change as they grow older? Or that what you think is your "type" isn't really your type at all? I would say now that my "type" is my husband - close to me in height, light brown hair, unusual eyes, warm heart, hard worker, worships me - but before I met him I tended toward taller, dark haired men.
goldennib: For the moment, my "type" doesn't go beyond appearances, but I'm working on that. Employment = Health Insurance = Therapy. Coming soon, I hope. :)
Tonito Bandito: Oooh, we like the same types? I *knew* there was a reason that I really really like you!! :)
Mitch: Yes, darling, that's the rule -- anyone mentioned in a post *HAS TO* comment. Hmmm ... I have to think about what you've said about the whole "sometimes, our 'type' is what we crave, whereas what we need is something else entirely." For now, in my case, I'd have to say this is probably true.
Sid: Fuck, I totally forgot the HIDs! :) They are really hot, too. And, if we lump Indians together with men from the Middle East, we've got another delicious ice cream flavor: "Crème Caramel." I'm a sucker for buttery brown skin, long black eyelashes, and warm chocolate eyes. I've only tasted 1 Creme Caramel guy, but he was very very yummy.
MamaChristy: I know!!!! I'm a weeeaaak and feeble woman who needs to get over her obsession with men's looks. :) ... And, you're right, I *do* think types change as we get older. For example, lately, I've been attracted to taller men.
Mel Chickk: So your tastes developed at a young age and they've stayed the same? Interesting. I think mine have changed slightly. I wonder if others' tastes have changed or stayed the same.
Carlos: I don't think I've *ever* dated against my type. This, of course, could be the source of my dating problems.
-cough-
More importantly, what does it say that my real-life favorite is Mint Chocolate Chip? Maybe I don't want to know...
Jay: I know what you mean ... about the, um, "nice and smart and funny" bit. ;)
Anita: VERY TRUE!!! As much as I joke about "looks being the most important thing", I simply cannot deal with dummies. I make an exception for my Paulie because he can't help himself, but the high "Smart Bar" is in effect for everyone else.
MamaChristy: No prob. :) Honestly, it's something that I know I need to work on if I ever want to see my dating life improve. :)
Dark hair
Computer literate. Doesn't have to be able to tear down and rebuild, but not a Mouseclicking 101 dropout.
There's probably more but I gotta go back to work.
Nics - is a guy out there who will fit the bill - don't give up yet!
In my experience the short guys tend to have the Banty Rooster Syndrome - no offense meant here ya'll - I just worked with and dates some short fellows and they had the BRS syndrome out the wazoo -
For instance...
Current boy: kayaking instructor
Previous: yoga instructor
Past boys include: the Chef, the Mechanic, the Computer Geek and the Artist.
I'm now a class III boater, can achieve a full backbend, change my own oil, cook a steak, replace a hardrive and compose photos. It's like "dating for personal improvment."
I wanna surf next... Mitch? What are you up to?
Seriously though, I do tend to be attracted to people whose activity/hobby/occupation of choice is something I'm into. Or who I meet through an a physical activity I'm into.
My problem is that sometimes I don't consider the other aspects of the person that may not make them the best partner. So once I've learned what I'm interested in the realtity of the rest of the guy's personality kicks in and I'm out the door.
PS. Yes Stolie, my best bud is very cute. Very Very cute in the NY Super Fudge Chunk with the occasional chunk of Dough kind of way.
Nics: It's kind of like this.
